Providing Compassionate Care to South Sudanese Refugees in Ethiopia

Dr. Tim Love, a MedSend Grant Recipient and participant in The Longevity Project, has spent years serving South Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia. His work sheds light on the immense challenges faced by these vulnerable communities and highlights the critical need for compassionate medical care and spiritual support.

“Every day here brings experiences that are both confusing and heartbreaking,” Dr. Love shares. One of those days involved Lochilia*, a South Sudanese refugee and mother of two young children. Her story paints a stark picture of the hardships endured by South Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia.

A Mother’s Story: Fighting Against the Odds

Lochilia arrived at Dr. Love’s hospital with severe abdominal pain, nausea, and significant weight loss. A tumor obstructing her intestines had already spread to her liver. “Cancer is always bad, especially in a low-resource environment like where we live,” Dr. Love explains. Despite successful surgery to remove the obstruction, the prognosis remains terminal.

What broke Dr. Love’s heart, however, was the sight of Lochilia’s 10-year-old daughter caring for her 2-year-old brother in the hospital. “Does she even question whether her brother is her responsibility to care for?” he asks.

Holistic Ministry: Meeting Physical and Spiritual Needs

Dr. Love and his team work tirelessly to minister to the bodies and souls of the refugees they serve. Yet language barriers and cultural challenges often complicate their efforts. “We do everything we can to holistically minister, but without good translators for the Nyangatom language, those attempts are laborious and unsatisfying,” he admits.

Even so, Dr. Love is committed to offering hope through every interaction. Whether by alleviating pain, sharing the gospel, or simply being present, his work exemplifies the love of Christ in action.

Supporting Global Healthcare: A Mission of Healing and Hope

The stories of South Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia highlight the urgent need for compassionate, holistic care in underserved regions. Through MedSend, healthcare professionals like Dr. Love bring healing and hope to those facing unimaginable hardships.
