By Rick Allen, MedSend President & CEO

We are deeply saddened to begin the New Year by reporting that MedSend co-founder Dr. David S. Topazian passed from this life on December 29, 2017.

A distinguished oral surgeon who frequently volunteered on medical missions throughout the world, Dr. Topazian also served as a leader in his local church and as a missionary pastor in Venezuela. In 1992, he co-founded what was then known as “Project MedSend” with the late Dr. Daniel Fountain to help alleviate the critical shortage of healthcare professionals on the mission field.

As MedSend’s first president & CEO, Dr. Topazian served the ministry tirelessly and without salary until he retired in 2008. He and his wife Deidre crisscrossed the country on behalf of MedSend and hosted the MedSend office in their home for many years. Under his leadership, MedSend awarded more than 300 grants and expanded its program to include training in Christian financial stewardship.

Dr. Topazian’s vision and hard work made MedSend a reality and the resulting impact on God’s kingdom has been enormous. Today, MedSend grants have freed over 600 Christian healthcare professionals to serve people in need throughout the world. We estimate that well over a million people have received compassionate, Christ-centered care through the ministry of MedSend healthcare professionals and tens of thousands have come to faith in Christ.

Beyond these many notable accomplishments, Dave Topazian was known for his deep commitment to prayer and the welfare of others, especially healthcare missionaries. I personally know scores of people in whom he invested his life as a friend and mentor. His family and a large circle of friends and colleagues speak eagerly of the positive impact he had on their lives.

Like many others, I draw comfort in knowing that Dave is now sitting at the feet of Jesus surrounded by all those who went before him. To be with Jesus is to be at peace. Please join me in praying that God would comfort his family and all of us who mourn the passing of this great servant of God.
