The Vital Role of Support in the Field

Low-Resource Environments Take Their Toll

If a child falls ill during the planting season in Zambia, Ethiopia, parents have a difficult decision to make. Do they continue planting so they can feed their entire family and pray the child recovers–or do they stop their work and travel a far distance to take their child to a clinic or hospital? Out of desperation, many choose the former.

“So often during this time of year children come in very very sick and are beyond any help we can offer. These are the hard days, and it is what I prayed over many years before coming overseas, knowing inevitably that I would come to see death regularly,” shares grant recipient Jessica Winston, PAC, serving at Mukinge Mission Hospital in Zambia.

Jessica is often the only clinician on the pediatric ward at Mukinge and handles most medical decisions. “When a child doesn’t survive you feel the weight of that and ask, ‘Are there different decisions I could have made that would have allowed this child to see another day?’,” she confesses. “The reality of that is harder than I ever could have imagined, but I am thankful for a team here who are incredibly supportive and encouraging.”

Financial and Spiritual Support Make a Difference

In her work over the last 2 years, Jessica feels God has reminded her often of her joy in treating pediatric patients. He has awakened a keen interest in better understanding and treating children who are malnourished. Without the support of MedSend donors, she would not have been able to come to Ethiopia and continue this work day in and day out.

“If it was not for your financial support and intercession on my behalf to the Father, I know this work would not have been feasible. I thank my God in all my remembrance of you and recognize I would not be here without your faithful giving,” she says.

God bless you for your faithfulness in supporting incredible medical missionaries like Jessica Winston! The young children she cares for, their mothers, fathers and entire families, are forever changed because of the compassionate, loving treatment they receive.
