MedSend Invests in Improving Access to Care in Gabon and Guinea, Africa

Financial investment in the National Scholars program means that more national doctors than ever can receive training in countries with a severe shortage of skilled physicians. Dr. Mamy Fulbert, a first-year resident in the general surgery program at Bongolo Christian Missionary Hospital in Gabon, was born and raised in Guinea, where the healthcare system is unable to support basic medical care access.

Recent WHO data reports Guinea faces a severe shortage of healthcare workers, with only about 0.1 physicians and 0.4 nurses and midwives per 1,000 people, reflecting a critical gap in medical personnel availability. Despite governmental efforts to improve, healthcare access remains limited, particularly in rural areas where infrastructural challenges and resource constraints hinder service delivery.

Dr. Mamy Fulbert’s Message to his MedSend Family

“It is a great joy for me, and I am very much excited getting in touch with you at this particular moment to express my happiness and gratitude to you wonderful people,” Dr. Fulbert tells us. “The process that led me to joining [the surgical residency program] was divine and a great blessing, which I recognized as a special calling from God to serve the needy in Africa.”

Dr. Fulbert says that the program upholds a highly professional standard of training and is also a spiritual building adventure.

“Being in such an amazing environment with people that share the same vision of serving those in need in Africa, is a very great opportunity and blessing in my life. The [faculty] are very special, highly qualified, and full of genuine faith and love of God. They are devoted not only to providing high quality training and care to patients, but also triggering their spiritual establishment and well-being through the gospel,” he shares. “None of this really could have been possible without your support. Thank you so much for your investment in my training.  I thank God for your generosity and your kindness.”

Lasting Impact

MedSend has awarded over $4 million to equip, train and disciple 120 national doctors in Africa and Asia since the National Scholars program began in 2014. So far, 38 National Scholars have completed their residency training and graduated, with 100% continuing to serve in areas of high need within their local regions.

The ministry of National Scholars has a powerful impact on countries struggling to meet the basic level of care needed to give their people a chance at a healthy life. Your financial support empowers these individuals who are committed to embodying the love of Jesus in a world in need.
