In 2023, Nkhoma Hospital in Malawi opened its new intensive care unit (ICU), significantly increasing regional ICU capacity by 50%. This new ICU, led by MedSend Grant Recipient Dr. Beth Stuebing, treats critical cases such as trauma, pesticide poisoning, and cerebral malaria, thanks to a dedicated team of nurses and residents.
However, Malawi’s economic challenges, including a 44% currency devaluation, are causing financial strain, affecting both the hospital’s operations and patients’ ability to pay for care. Despite these hardships, the hospital continues to provide essential medical services.
As the surgical department grows and is able to do more complex procedures, news of Nkhoma’s capabilities has begun to spread. Dr. Stuebing and the team were featured in a national newspaper article, explaining their training program:
Focusing on Professional, Relational and Spiritual Health
Providing high level care in the difficult environment of Malawi and Nkhoma Hospital puts Dr. Stuebing at high risk of burnout and moral injury. To ensure she and her family have the support they need to stay on the field for the long term, they are also participants in MedSend’s Longevity Project. Recently, Dr. Stuebing sat down with us to record a message of thanks to her MedSend family.
