Family Medicine Training in Kenya: Why Cavine Ochieng Is Becoming the Doctor His Community Never Had

CavineOchieng4x3

As a child in rural Kenya, Cavine Ochieng watched neighbors live with untreated illness because the nearest hospital was far away and care felt unaffordable. Today, he is in family medicine training in Kenya to become the kind of doctor he rarely saw growing up.

Now a resident at AIC Litein Hospital, Cavine is preparing to return to communities like his own. Places where access to healthcare can mean hours of travel or going without care entirely.

A Doctor Shaped by What He Saw

Cavine remembers how people around him delayed seeking care:

“Sometimes people just go on with illnesses that are not diagnosed… they know something isn’t right, but they also know they cannot afford it.”

Those memories are shaping the kind of physician he hopes to be—one who brings skilled, compassionate care close to home.

Training That Multiplies Impact

Cavine was selected as AIC Litein’s first choice for residency. His instructors describe him as diligent, conscientious, and marked by Christlike character. They see in him not just clinical ability, but the heart of a physician who will serve both body and spirit.

Through MedSend’s National Scholars Program, Cavine is receiving support that allows him to focus on his family medicine training in Kenya and prepare for long-term service in underserved areas.
