Dr. Daniel Manishimwe is a MedSend National Scholar and dedicated surgical resident at Kibuye Hope Hospital in Burundi. Originally from Rwanda, Daniel is in his first year of his residency program and is making a significant impact in his community.
A Doctor in Need
In both Burundi and Rwanda, the ratio of doctors to patients is alarmingly low at about 1 doctor for every 10,000 people. Daniel’s commitment to serving his community stems from his desire to address this critical need. With only a few doctors available to care for thousands of patients, many vulnerable individuals do not receive the care they need. Daniel chose to pursue a career in medicine to help bridge this gap and provide life-saving care to those who need it most.
A Heartbreaking Yet Powerful Story
Recently, Daniel shared a story that highlights the challenges he faces and the profound impact his work has on the lives of others. A 10-year-old girl was brought to Kibuye Hope Hospital suffering from severe abdominal pain after a tragic assault. Despite being hospitalized and treated for days, her condition continued to worsen. Daniel took the time to speak with her family, offering both medical care and spiritual guidance during this incredibly difficult time. Sadly, the girl did not survive, but through Daniel’s compassion and words, her grieving mother found faith and hope.
“It was devastating to lose such a young girl with her whole life ahead of her to such a small accident. I took the time to speak with the family and explained that after this life, those who receive Jesus as their Savior will have eternal life. The mother became a Christian and told me that her experience over those days had changed her. She had initially planned revenge on [the family of the child who fatally injured her daughter], but now she said she would pray and become a believer, hoping to one day reunite with her daughter in the afterlife. I thank God for the opportunity to share this moment with the family. We continue to talk with the family, and they often reach out to me. They now attend church regularly and invite the pastor to their home daily to continue learning about the Kingdom of God.”
