Training Local Leaders to Save Lives in Malawi

In the heart of Malawi, MedSend-supported doctor Christina Miller is proving that sustainable change happens when training local leaders to serve their own communities.

After giving a talk in a rural village on preventing childhood illnesses, Christina was met with a challenge: “That’s a great talk, but what are you going to do for us?” The need was immense, but instead of taking on everything herself, Christina saw an opportunity to empower others.

Pastors Become Life-Savers

“The pastors in this community were known for having the gift of healing,” Christina shares. “People knocked on their doors from morning till night asking for healing for their families.” Seeing their trusted role, Christina provided them with basic medical tools—thermometers, children’s Tylenol, and sugar for making oral rehydration solution.

She trained them to identify fevers, administer treatment, and guide families to seek hospital care when necessary. “Within about six weeks, the chiefs of the village knocked on the pastor’s door and said, ‘Last month, 12 babies in our village died, and this month only 2 babies died. So we can really see that you’re making a difference.’”

Watch Dr. Christina Miller share how MedSend is helping equipping national leaders to save lives:

The Impact of MedSend: More Than Financial Support

Christina’s ability to serve in Malawi is possible because of MedSend’s comprehensive support—not just financially, but relationally, spiritually, and professionally.

“MedSend didn’t just pay off my loans,” Christina explains. “They have supported me in ways I never expected. The Longevity Project helped me learn how to communicate with my team, helped me build interventions that decreased patient death rates and improved team morale.”

She reflects on the spiritual encouragement MedSend provides: “I have mentors who pray for me and check in on me. They remind me that I’m not alone in this work.”

To MedSend donors, Christina shares her heartfelt gratitude: “Because of your generosity, I am able to be here, serving the people of Malawi. Thank you for being part of this mission.”
