Christian Doctors in Africa: How Franka Aguko Is Bringing Healing and Hope

Christian doctors in Africa

When Dr. Franka Aguko was just a schoolgirl, she helped care for her mother after surgery. Cleaning wounds and dressing bandages sparked something deep inside her—a call to medicine. But it was a moment years later, during her undergraduate studies, that truly changed everything.

A woman in severe pain came to the hospital needing urgent surgery, but she had no money and was told to wait six months. Franka saw her suffering and felt helpless. “That felt very hopeless,” she recalls. “Sending somebody who was in visible pain away because they didn’t have money… This shouldn’t be a thing.”

That moment solidified her calling to serve people in Africa who are often forced to live without healthcare due to cost or access. “Seeing healthier lives, seeing people getting affordable care that they need—that’s when I knew I needed to serve in Africa, and Kenya in particular.”

Breaking Barriers with MedSend

Now a family medicine resident in Kenya, Franka is one of MedSend’s National Scholars. The financial burden of postgraduate medical training could have delayed her dream indefinitely. “I’m sure I wouldn’t be here without MedSend,” she says. “The scholarship has removed the financial barrier… and the monthly stipend gives me peace of mind. I can focus on just trying to be a doctor and serve.”

Because of MedSend supporters, Christian doctors in Africa like Franka are providing whole-person care—physical, emotional, and spiritual. “I consider myself a Christian who happens to be a doctor. Every day I do have the prayer of ‘God, use me as your vessel.’”
