Transforming Lives in Malawi Through Medicine and Faith
As a young woman, MedSend-supported doctor Catherine Hodge came across the quote “Pity weeps and walks away but compassion sits and stays to suffer,” and the trajectory of her life changed. “I felt the tugging of the Lord say ‘I don’t just want you to care about people. I want I want there to be an action. I want there to be a fire that burns in you to make the whole trajectory of your life focused around sharing that cup of water in my name’.”
Today, in one of the world’s poorest nations, Dr. Hodge is making a profound impact. From establishing Malawi’s first neonatal unit to training local family medicine residents, her work at Nkhoma Mission Hospital is a testament to the power of compassionate care and gospel ministry.
Saving Malawi’s Tiniest Patients
When Dr. Hodge arrived in Malawi in 2014, newborns in critical condition shared hospital beds with their mothers, and there was no dedicated neonatal care. She spearheaded the creation of the country’s first neonatal unit, facing daunting challenges with limited resources.
“Literally, every time I walk into the neonatal ward, my heart just explodes in joy,” Dr. Hodge shared. Over eight years, the unit has expanded to accommodate increasing demand and reduce infant mortality rates by 45%.

From Despair to Hope: A Mother’s Story
In the neonatal ward, Dr. Hodge met a mother who named her twins “Trouble” and “Sorrow” out of desperation. Through the support of the hospital chaplain and the power of the gospel, the mother found hope and renamed her babies “Thanks” and “Praise.”
“Hearing the gospel changed her outlook,” Dr. Hodge reflected. “It turned her sorrow into joy.”

Equipping Malawian Doctors to Lead
One of Dr. Hodge’s most impactful roles is leading one of only two family medicine residency programs in Malawi. This program trains Malawian doctors to deliver high-quality medical care while addressing the spiritual and emotional needs of their patients.
“When my Malawian residents have conversations with patients, they bring a level of care and connection that is truly transformative,” Dr. Hodge said. “They not only treat patients but also disciple them, building up entire families in the process.”
Currently, six residents are in training, with the program steadily growing to meet the needs of communities across the country. “We’re equipping them to multiply themselves across Malawi,” she added. “Their leadership is the future of healthcare here.”
